Disability Management Consultant

Southern Company is seeking a professional to coordinate resolution to medical and disability issues of employees in a manner, which affords high quality health care and is expedient, efficient, and cost effective. This is accomplished by collaborating closely with internal team members, health care professionals, corporate legal counsel, company HR representatives, IBEW and company management in Southern Company. This professional will primarily collaborate with company locations in Mobile County and the Southern Alabama area.

Major Responsibilities of the job include:

  • Coordinate activities related to medical management injury/illness cases under the guidance of corporate Medical Directors
  • Coordinate the accommodation process for client departments according to the ADA Regulations. This includes job analysis and return to work activities
  • Assist management in determining employee Fitness for Duty and coordination of related processes
  • Assist, as needed, in the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) process with vendor as it relates to serious health condition certification, communication, and return to work
  • Establish and maintain documentation (electronic database and hard copy) of medical treatment and conditions on employees. All information shall be kept in strict confidence according to privacy laws and ADA regulations
  • Communicate clearly and timely with management, employees, medical director, and fellow Disability Management team members on related activity of injured or ill employees. Consult with employees and management on applicability of other available resources (LTD, Workers’ Compensation, Medical Benefits, EAP/Mental Health Benefits, Employee Service Center, Physical Exams, Etc.)
  • Assist with Workers’ Compensation activities including investigation, coverage determination, company defense, and approval of medical treatment and payment
  • Accountable to Disability Management Team for support and teamwork in accomplishing team goals and performing team services
  • Accountable to Medical Director, Company Management, and Employees for services provided
  • Reporting Relationships: Direct report to Supervisor, Disability Management.

Candidates with the following preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply:

Education

  • AS or BS in Nursing, Health Sciences, or related field required
  • Active RN license required

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years occupational case management or Medical/ Surgery or Occupational Medicine experience, preferred
  • Case Management experience, Certified Case Manager (CCM) accreditation, and/or Certification in Occupational Health Nursing (COHN), preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of disability management practices, workers compensation laws and policies such as Family Medical Leave Act, American’s with Disability Act, 1973 Rehabilitation Act-Section 503, medical privacy regulations and Human Resources Management practices preferred
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Available for frequent, short notice travel within the service territory
  • Working knowledge of data base systems for use in performing job (RiskMaster, Oracle, Service Now, Etc.) preferred
