Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents is a unique acute care, inpatient specialty hospital with 110 licensed beds, including Med Surg. and Residential Treatment Center; staffed by the finest physicians and treatment teams. We treat patients, ages 2-22 who have chronic illnesses, brain injuries and neurobehavioral disorders with co-behavioral issues.

Position Purpose:

Provides appropriate and individualized medical nutrition therapy for children and adolescents with chronic illness including diabetes and eating disorders. Coordinates and oversees the Diabetes Self - Management Education (DSME) Program to ensure that the program meets standards and is effective to provide for improved patient outcomes. Program coordination and oversight includes the planning, implementation and evaluation of all aspects of the DSME entity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for appropriate and individualized medical nutrition therapy for assigned patients.
  • Responsible for addressing specific nutritional concerns as outlined for each patient in their nutritional assessment. Concerns are goal specific and would be included in the Master Treatment Plan for the patient.
  • Provides individual nutrition and/or diabetes counseling and education sessions as defined in the treatment plan. Plans for and/or teaches Diabetes Education Class.
  • Coordinates and oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of facility policies and protocols regarding diabetes treatment and diabetes educational programming.
  • Provides overall coordination for the DSME Program to include maintenance of recognition by the American Diabetes Association.
  • Facilitates implementation of physician orders and hospital policies regarding diabetes treatment for patients. Provides medical nutrition therapy and diabetes education for patients with diabetes.

Qualifications: Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics or equivalent, Masters degree preferred. Possesses knowledge of the nutritional status of children including growth, development and behavioral issues as they affect nutritional intake. Previous experiences providing medical nutrition therapy for individuals with various chronic illnesses and special nutritional needs. Completion of all standards necessary to possess and maintain recognition as a Certified Diabetes Educator as defined by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators.

Education:

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics or Food and Nutrition.

Licensure:

Registered Dietitian with certification by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators.

Experience:

Experience working with patients with Diabetes and other chronic diseases. Experience with diagnosis specific program planning, oversight and evaluation. Prior experience working with children and adolescents is also desired.
