Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Cardiology Services, is responsible and accountable for coordination of specific procedures within Cardiac Services at all CHHD sites including Harvey, Calumet City, Flossmoor and Tinley Park. Performs a variety of technical procedures in the application of ultrasonic waves to humans for diagnosis of disease, performing in the department or mobile to other areas of the hospital. Schedule patients and prepares records as required on adult and pediatric patients as well as, related clerical duties.

Demonstrates necessary skills and knowledge to provide services for the patients according to the unit specific competencies as appropriate to the age of the patients served as delineated in the Scope of Care.

Knows follows and actively support the philosophy, mission and Vision of Ingalls Hospital. Adheres to all hospital policies, procedures and standards of care. Observes and adheres to all corporate compliance requirements and communicate issues as they arise to the appropriate parties as identified in the Corporate Compliance Plan.


Essential Job Functions

  • Confirms appropriate order for procedure against physician order.
  • Takes direction from cardiologist and acts in a professional manner.
  • Manipulates transducer by hand while observing sound wave display on screen to note ultrasonic patterns produced 100% of the time.
  • Activates equipment to produce photographs of the visual images of the organ of interest.
  • Obtains a medical history from the patients’ chart prior to implementing procedure.
  • Performs scanning operations on assigned patients to obtain optimum scans.

Required Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support Certification through The American Heart Association
  • Must have echo registry from ARDMS or CCI.
  • Ability to assist with transfer of patients from cart to chair, which can involve pushing/pulling in a forward bent posture.
  • Must have experience interacting with patients.
  • Must be able to read, write and spell.
  • Six to twelve months of clinical experience required or six months of on the job training after completing an accredited echo school.
  • Education in Ultrasound Technology with a proven clinical experience is required with certificate from accredited school.
  • Current RN licensure State of Illinois (Department of Professional Regulation)
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional membership with an active participation is not required, but is desired; American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, Registry of Vascular Technologist, Society of Echocardiography
  • Pediatric echocardiography is not required, but is desired
