Position Summary

Coconino Community College (CCC) was established in Flagstaff, Arizona in 1991 and serves all of Coconino County, spanning an immense 18,661 square-mile area. Bordered on the north by the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell and on the south by the red rocks of Sedona, Coconino County is home to 150,000 residents and the ancestral lands of several tribal nations. At an elevation of 7,000 feet, Flagstaff (the county seat and home to Northern Arizona University) is surrounded by one of the world’s largest ponderosa pine forests and offers four beautiful seasons with mild weather in the summer and lots of sunshine in the winter. Coconino Community College is a major provider of healthcare professionals throughout Coconino County and is known for its quality graduates. CCC graduates approximately 30 Registered Nurses, 60-80 CNAs, and 20 Medical Assistants each year, and plans are underway to add additional Allied Health programs to serve local health care facilities. Full-time Nursing Faculty at CCC are responsible for teaching courses and assessing learning in classroom, clinical, and skills lab settings. Teaching assignments may include alternative delivery methods including online and video conferencing; day, evening, and weekend classes; and multiple local sites. Faculty are also responsible for supporting students and for committee work and other assignments at the college. Must work collegially as a team member in a small department. Nursing faculty report to the Director of Nursing & Allied Health. This position is a full-time, benefits-eligible position based at the Fourth Street Campus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As described in CCC’s Instructional Load procedure (308-02), full-time faculty have a minimum weekly accountability of forty (40) hours during the typical contract period (fall and spring semesters). As a general rule, full-time faculty spend approximately 30 hours per week in teaching and teaching-related activities, five hours per week for office hours and student advising, and five hours per week for committee work and other duties. Faculty teaching online are expected to meet these same obligations. Because class schedules and other commitments vary widely among faculty, there is no standard expectation for work days or hours; full-time faculty should meet their weekly accountability in a way that best fits their needs and the needs of their students and enables them to effectively serve the College.

Teaching & Learning:
  • Teach 30 load hours of coursework per year in a professional manner.
  • Develop and submit course syllabi for assigned classes.
  • Adhere to course and program outlines and student learning outcomes.
  • Employ effective teaching and learning strategies and tools.
  • Respond to students in a timely fashion in accordance with expectations outlined in course syllabi.
  • Collaborate with other faculty to develop and revise curricula, teaching materials, and teaching strategies as needed to stay current with Arizona State Board of Nursing and industry needs and expectations.
  • Participate in ongoing assessment of student learning at both the course and program level in cooperation with college faculty and staff.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to remain current in the teaching discipline and effective teaching methods.

Student Support:
  • Maintain a minimum of 5 posted office hours per week for student consultation.
  • Support students in meeting course and program learning outcomes.
  • Assist students in preparing to pass the NCLEX.
  • Respond to student inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Serve as a professional role model for students.

Committee Work & Other Assignments:
  • Attend required meetings, including Nursing & Allied Health department and CTE division meetings.
  • Participate in the shared governance and operation of the college by actively serving on college committees as assigned by the Director of Nursing and Dean of Career & Technical Education.
  • Fulfill tasks assigned by the Director of Nursing & Allied Health, such as:
    • Mentoring other full-time and part-time faculty.
    • Participating in the evaluation of part-time faculty as requested.
    • Participating in department budgeting and planning.
    • Recommending equipment and supply purchases.
    • Providing input on class schedules and instructor assignments.
    • Providing input on clinical schedules and assignments.
    • During accreditation cycles, fully participate and contribute as needed to the accreditation
effort.
  • Collaborate with other college employees as necessary and appropriate.
  • Utilize the chain of command to solve problems.
  • Behave in a professional, ethical, and collegial manner.
  • Promote the philosophy, mission, values, purposes, and Strategic Plan of the College

  • Attend trainings as requested or needed
  • Create and meet yearly goals

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to teach effectively, knowledge of the subject area, computer and related technology. Ability to maintain professional ethics and confidentiality of students and staff. Ability to support and promote the mission, values, purposes, and strategic plan of the College. Ability to integrate subject area with other related curricula. Knowledge of the applicable state and federal laws, such as FERPA. Ability to work in a culturally diverse and team environment. Commitment to continuous improvement of teaching practices.

Minimum Qualifications

As required by the Arizona State Board of Nursing, every registered nursing program faculty
member must hold a current Arizona registered nurse license in good standing or multi-state privilege to practice in Arizona under A.R.S., Title 32, Chapter 15. In addition, every faculty member providing didactic (classroom) instruction must have:

  • At least two years of experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care; and
  • A graduate degree. If the graduate degree is not in Nursing, the faculty member shall hold a minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.

Preferred

Experience teaching Nursing and Allied Health in a learner-centered college environment and working with a diverse student population. Experience teaching online courses.
