Supervised by: UWCK Reef Revitalization Project Liaison

Overview

UWCK seeks a Florida Keys Ocean Guardian School Coordinator to join our initiative Revitalizing the Florida Keys through Reef Restoration and Beyond. Serving on the UWCK team, this position will primarily support the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary’s (FKNMS) Education, Interpretation, and Outreach in expanding the NOAA Ocean Guardian School (OGS) program within Monroe County School District (MCSD) schools.

UWCK’s Revitalizing the Florida Keys through Reef Restoration and Beyond is a five-year partnership with the United Arab Emirates and other partners supporting a bold, ambitious plan to restore the Florida Keys’ economically valuable marine ecosystem and provide related education, engaging residents for a lasting impact.

NOAA Ocean Guardian Schools (OGS) is designed to empower schools and students to take an active role in protecting their local watersheds, the ocean, and the living creatures that inhabit them. The OGS program provides resources and support for schools to implement projects and activities that focus on reducing pollution, conserving water, and promoting the health and sustainability of the ocean and its ecosystems. The program encourages students to become environmental stewards and act to make a positive impact in their communities.

Key Responsibilities
Programmatic Execution
  • Support efforts for successful completion of the project’s goals.
o Recruit additional MCSD schools into the NOAA OGS program.
o Assist MCSD schools as they apply for and begin their OGS program.
o Support MCSD schools currently enrolled in the OGS program.
o Coordinate process and support MCSD in achieving recognition as a NOAA OGS School District.
o Support NOAA OGS Ambassadors program in Monroe County, as needed.
  • Support finance and administrative details of the project.
o Review MCSD schools’ OGS applications and provide appropriate guidance.
o Perform site visits to MCSD schools for recognition and student engagement.
o Conduct periodic check-ins with MCSD schools on OGS status.
o Work with review team to ensure schools’ compliance with OGS requirements.
o Collect and monitor school’s measurable project data and maintain appropriate database.
o Participate in planning calls related to OGS management to ensure effective communication and collaboration, as well as to stay up to date with any new policies or procedures.
  • Support collaboration between NOAA OGS program and Mission: Iconic Reefs project.
  • Support OGS role within UWCK Revitalizing the Florida Keys through Reef Restoration and Beyond.
Communication
  • Support project-related communications coordinating with UWCK, NOAA, FKNMS and MCSD on related OGS topics.
  • Assist with OGS presentations, serving as an external presence on behalf of this project.
  • Build brand awareness of OGS program within Monroe County.
Relationship Building
  • Foster and strengthen existing partnerships as well as identify and establish new relationships with stakeholders, educators, and community leaders.
  • Engage in community outreach to involve community members in this project.
  • Collaborate with and work under the guidance of the FKNMS Education, Interpretation, and Outreach Team Lead to ensure successful project implementation and alignment with UWCK.

Education/Experience
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience working in a collaborative setting, particularly within marine science and/or education preferred.
  • Experience working in Google and Microsoft software programs required.
  • Program coordinator experience preferred.
  • Public speaking or external engagement experience required.

Essential Physical Functions
  • Driver’s license required.
  • Occasional bending and lifting of heavy materials.
Position Type
  • $23/hour
  • Part-time position (average 20 hours per week but may fluctuate from 10-30 hours in any given week depending on the needs of the program, will be indicated in advance by supervisor).
  • Some work hours may be flexible while others will require engagement at scheduled times from Monday – Friday, 8am-4pm.
  • This position may have the opportunity for some remote work.
  • Early mornings, evenings, and weekends are required on occasion, both remotely and in person.
  • Periodic travel within Monroe County in personal vehicle expected.
