Description

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a significant impact on the development of innovative spacecraft? Do you enjoy implementing nuanced algorithms and high-reliability systems with custom logic and embedded software?

If so, you could be a good fit developing FPGAs and Embedded Software in SEE, the Electronic Systems Engineering Group in APL’s Space Exploration Sector.

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is seeking an embedded systems engineer to architect and design embedded spacecraft avionics systems.

The APL Space Exploration Sector (SES) is developing highly integrated FPGA-based spacecraft avionics for a number of planetary, heliophysics, national security, and extreme environment missions. Designs include embedded processors to support spacecraft command and data handling, interfaces and subsystem control, and digital signal processing (DSP) co-processors to support applications in navigation, time-transfer, and spectrum estimation. Experienced embedded system architects and design engineers are needed with increasing levels of functional integration in FPGA-based embedded systems. The APL/SES is seeking an FPGA and Embedded Software Engineer to architect advanced embedded systems and support core implementation. The candidate will contribute on small teams (2-5 members), design and verify high complexity digital circuits and systems, contribute to an internal patent portfolio for use across different programs, and write requirements and interface control documents. The candidate will be a member of a dynamic integrated product team and support all development phases, from early architecture through detailed implementation to integration and test and flight support.

Duties:
  • Architect SoC FPGA-based embedded spaceflight systems, including trades on internal structure, external I/O, embedded processors and programmable logic for low-power and radiation-tolerant space flight missions.
  • Participate in implementation and verification of block level and top level VHDL designs.
  • Program processors and microcontrollers for embedded applications
  • Work collaboratively with spacecraft and avionics systems engineering team members to decompose high-level requirements and draft detailed FPGA and software requirements, interface control documents, and verification & test plans.
  • Advance JHU/APL’s FPGA patent portfolio of avionics and DSP components by serving as a liaison between design teams for re-use, re-purposing and modification.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience in the design and implementation of SoC FPGA-based systems using VHDL or Verilog.
  • Demonstrated experience in microcontrollers or embedded processors
  • Experienced in testing and debugging FPGA and firmware designs in simulation and in hardware
  • Experience with FPGA design constraints, RTL code optimization, and timing closure
  • Experience with FPGA design and simulation tools (QuestaSim, Libero, Vivado, etc.)
  • Demonstrated successful teamwork and leadership skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You exceed our expectations if you have the following:
  • MS. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • At least 5 years of experience developing FPGA and Embedded systems for aerospace applications
  • Proficiency with C/C++ or RTOS
  • Experience with designing and implementing signal processing algorithms in FPGAs
  • Experience with designing and implementing networking protocols
  • Experience with static analysis tools for FPGAs and Embedded Software
  • Experience with modern development best practices, including use of version control
Be Part of Something Innovative

Over the past 25 years, the Space Exploration Sector at APL, has pushed the boundaries of what is possible; delivering game-changing impacts to sponsors like NASA and the Department of Defense. This includes historic, science space firsts like New Horizons reaching Pluto, Parker Solar Probe being the first to “touch” the sun, and the DART mission that redirected an asteroid for planetary defense. As a not-for-profit university affiliated research center, APL also delivered solutions to our nation’s national security challenges, as proven with the recent Deep Space Advanced Radar Concept (DARC) Tech Demo, and acts as a trusted partner with the US Space Force in space domain awareness and space-integrated warfare.

APL teams are currently developing missions that will advance the search for life in the Solar System through programs such as Europa Clipper and Dragonfly, exploring the lunar and cislunar domains, and providing fundamental knowledge of our Sun’s influence on the near-Earth environment through IMAP and other research and technology endeavors.
