Why does the job exist?

Juvenile Probation Officer's (JPO's) are responsible for the supervision and performance monitoring of adjudicated misdemeanor and felony offenders in the community on behalf of the Courts and Supervised Release Panel.

How does it get done?

This position will screen, assess and staff to make appropriate recommendations on all referrals and complaints on clients. They will attend court hearing and make recommendations. Position provides supervision of juveniles by conducting home, school, and office visits to ensure compliance with court ordered probation and supervised release requirements. Maintain clients master file and enter data into Family Automated Client Tracking System(FACTS). JPO's will collaborate with community resources, such as law enforcement agencies, school and service providers.

Possesses conflict resolution skills and ability to make rational, quick decisions.
Needs to have the ability to communicate clearly, concisely and thoroughly as they are required to write case notes, assessments and other documents.
Familiar with JDAI (Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative) and Justice Reform

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in sociology, psychology, corrections, guidance and counseling, social work, police science, criminal justice, juvenile justice, education or public administration and two (2) years of experience as a Juvenile Probation Parole Officer. Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Work is performed in an office setting. Late hours, weekend and callback work may be required. Will be exposed to regular periods of video display terminal and keyboard usage and stressful situations. Some travel may be required. The following conditions are also applicable:
Incumbents must have a telephone and must be willing to give this phone number to the Director of Field Services.
Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times.
Incumbents must be willing to be frequently on-call 24 hours a day. Work is in an office setting, client's homes and institutions.
Incumbents must be willing to travel, and be willing to work shifts, holidays, weekends and call back for emergencies.
Incumbents must be willing to work with offenders that have high-risk behaviors and require intervention or services.
Incumbents must be willing to work with potential risk from offenders who are possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol or otherwise distressed.
