Title: Stacks Assistant (Science & Engineering Library) -Temporary Updated: May 10, 2023

Position Summary :

The Stacks Assistant will help complete a summer weeding project in the Science & Engineering Library stacks.

This is a 40 hour/week position (8 am – 5 pm, Monday – Friday), beginning June 5, 2023 and ending June 30, 2023.

About the Work Unit :

The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries at Vanderbilt University comprises nine libraries, as well as service departments in collections services, digital scholarship & scholarly communications, information technology and digital services, and teaching & learning. We collect, preserve and make accessible a wide variety of resources, we partner with faculty and students to shape research, and we encourage the development of informed scholars and engaged citizens.

The Stevenson Science and Engineering Library is one of nine campus libraries within the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries at Vanderbilt. It is the only library open 24 hours per day and is the busiest library in the system. Located in Stevenson Center, the library’s primary user base can be found within the Stevenson Center complex as well as in Featheringill Hall, Buttrick Hall, Olin Hall and the Engineering and Science Building. The library’s staff is made up of the User Services Coordinator, three liaison librarians, and one library director. The staff function as a team, with librarians mainly focusing on outreach to faculty and the User Services Coordinator handling services and operations occurring within the SEL facility.

Key Functions :

Under the direction of the User Services Coordinator, the Stacks Assistant will:

  • Pull books from the library shelves from a list
  • Mark books for withdrawal
  • Box books for shipping
  • Move books within the library

Supervisory Relationships :

The Stacks Assistant reports to the User Services Coordinator.

N/A

Experience and Skills :

  • Ability to lift 45 pounds.
  • Ability to push library book trucks.
  • Ability to climb on a step stool to reach upper shelving.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to read and understand library call numbers.
