MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST – CORE LAB DESCRIPTION

Shift Time:
3PM-11PM

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, performs routine and complex analytic procedures on blood and/or other body fluids or specimens, involving manual techniques or the use of laboratory instruments and information systems.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in a health-related or scientific field is required; a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology is preferred.

SKILLS:

The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. Demonstrated knowledge of disease processes as related to patient conditions and pertinent laboratory testing performed. A basic knowledge of mathematics, accuracy, precision, normal ranges, and correlation with existing methods including evaluation of clinical specimens for suitability for testing and presence of interfering substances. Basic computer skills for data entry, instrument operations and report production. Basic knowledge of microscope use and function. Demonstrates effective, positive verbal communication skills to those served by the laboratory. Basic ability to take steps to resolve instrument problems. An in-depth knowledge of laboratory medicine. Able to work independently. Excellent troubleshooting skills. Able to multi-task.

LICENSE:

Certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists, preferred.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs routine and complex biological, chemical, hematological, immunological, microscopic, and/or bacteriological tests procedures on laboratory specimens, using manual or automated techniques and information systems, for the purpose of diagnosing, preventing, or treatment of disease.
  • The Medical Technologist is qualified to perform all duties of the Medical Technologist job, and in a given job situation may or may not perform all of the duties; actual duties will pertain to the specific Medical Technologist position.
  • Collaborates with leadership to improve processes and resolve problems, including evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release.mu
  • Performs calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, instruments and/or laboratory information systems.
  • Following successful completion of competency testing may perform processing, testing, and reporting without direct supervision.
  • Complies with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, including compliance, quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Participates in various quality assessment and improvement activities including, proficiency testing, gathering data for quality assurance monitors, developing, and adhering to safe work practices, and successfully completes regular competency assessments.
  • Assists in the development and/or design of new test procedures and/or methodologies; participates in the evaluation, correlation, and introduction of new instruments or procedures.
  • Maintains the laboratory and procedures in inspection ready condition.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned or requested, including inventory control, reagent preparation, special projects. Acting as a Team Leader, assumes designated functions of the supervisor in his/her absence according to COLA/CLIA requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Effort:

  • Requires considerable walking and standing.
  • Occasional light lifting to store supplies.
  • Color Vision: Ability to distinguish and identify different colors necessary to perform job functions.

Work Environment:

  • Works in a clinical laboratory and works with hazardous reagents and infectious materials.
  • Potential risk of an exposure to hazardous medications or waste materials of hazardous medications.
