Job description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Nuclear Science Division has an opening for a Senior Scientific Engineering Associate to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will work as an innovative applied researcher, as part of a team of scientists and engineers in the Applied Nuclear Physics Program (ANP). You will grow your scientific and computational engineering expertise and do world leading research guided by domain experts and principal investigators.

The ANP program conducts transformative research in the field of radiation detection and imaging through inventing novel detector concepts, fusing multi-sensor data with state-of-the-art algorithms and machine learning techniques and robotics. We strive to foster a diverse and inclusive environment.

For questions please contact Dr. Marco Salathe (msalathe@lbl.gov).

What You Will Do:

  • Participate in the development, construction and operation of multi-sensor systems using cameras, lidars, radars, GPS/INS and radiation detectors.
  • Investigate methods to autonomously control robotic platforms and unmanned aerial systems.
  • Develop, implement, and test new statistical algorithms and machine learning for radiological/nuclear detection, identification and imaging.
  • Develop and implement advanced data analysis methods. This will include multi-sensor data fusion, application of computer vision techniques, implementation and optimization of state-of-the-art machine learning tools, and optimization for either real-time or large-scale offline processing.
  • Perform research and development following best practices, ensuring reproducible and well documented results.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Contribute to other group activities related to advanced radiation detection concepts.
  • Publish papers, reports, and proposals and make oral presentations of original work at conferences and seminars.
  • May supervise activities of non-exempt and exempt personnel.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent knowledge in physics, nuclear engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Experience in machine learning, computer vision, statistical analysis, and/or radiation detection and imaging.
  • Experience with programming in python, C/C++ and management of software in a Linux ecosystem.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform research individually and as part of a group.
  • Demonstrated outstanding data analysis skills and proficiency in C/C++ and/or Python.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills to contribute to ANP goals and objectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills to interact with scientific investigators, administrators, management and technical staff.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in physics, nuclear engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Experience with radiation detection and gamma-ray or neutron imaging.
  • Experience with algorithm development, signal processing, or statistical analysis.
  • Experience with integrating and operating sensors including video and lidar.
  • Experience with processing and analyzing data from video and/or lidar sensors.
  • Demonstrated record of academic publications.
  • Familiarity with Docker and Docker-compose.
  • Familiarity with ROS, OpenCV, Open3D, OpenCL, and Tensorflow and/or Pytorch.

Salary:

This position is expected to pay a targeted range of $7,853 to $10,799 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
