Title:Veterinary Technician: LAT

The Veterinary Technician provides technical support and assists veterinarian with procedures and examinations. The Veterinary Technician assists with prescribing treatments and/or protocol support as requested by the investigator or veterinarian. He/she maintains treatment carts and treatment storeroom; supports rodent and transgenic and breeding colonies as requested; and interfaces with investigators and animal husbandry staff. Functions as a key member of the technical team in support of critical research.

Requirements:

  • Adheres to facility SOPs, protocols, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines for animal care at all levels of biohazard containment.
  • Assists veterinarian with examinations and procedures, and alerts veterinarian of emergencies
  • Administers clinical treatments as directed
  • Monitors the health status of the animals
  • Performs a variety of technical procedures
  • Assists in maintaining breeder colony including transgenic animals
  • Maintains medical records and online databases
  • Maintains inventory of technical supplies and ensuring that supplies do not fall below critical levels or expire, and that items are requested or ordered with sufficient lead-time to ensure availability and delivery.
  • Provides anesthesia administration and recovery
  • Performs animal health surveillance observations and checks for good overall cage conditions once weekly
  • Supervises caretakers during weekend shifts
  • Verifies completion of tasks by technical personnel
  • Adheres to quality control procedures
  • Conducts weekly procedural training and departmental staff meetings
  • Reviews technical requirements stated in Animal Study Protocols (ASPs) and discern discrepancies between technical requests and ASPs.
  • Knowledgeable on the daily activities of the animal facility including receiving, handling and restraint, health surveillance, equipment maintenance, supply inventory, animal manipulations, laboratory procedures, and other contract-related duties.
  • Collaboratively work with investigators to establish and maintain breeding colonies

Experience and Education

  • Must have phlebotomy experience
  • Must have experience providing procedures and treatments with rodents
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in a research setting
  • Experience using Transnetx a plus
