There is one vacancy in the Utility Maintenance Division, which will be filled in any combination of the following job categories: Welder or Welder Sr.

WELDER POSITION:

GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, welds metal components together to fabricate parts and repair vehicles, equipment and heavy equipment.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Welds fabricate parts, and repairs vehicles, equipment, and heavy equipment in accordance with standard procedures, safety regulations, and City policy. Works independently and makes appropriate decisions based on work experience. Examines materials to be repaired to determine the strength and heating properties of parent metals and alloys; studies blueprints and sketches to determine needed repairs and construction standards. Uses welding equipment to join metal pieces and burn or cut through metal. Maintains work area. Performs maintenance and repairs within scope of authority, and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; notifies supervisors of repair problems beyond the scope of authority. Performs general maintenance, construction, and repair tasks as directed. Ensures that safety rules and regulations are followed; utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports safety hazards, equipment problems, and emergency situations. Ensures that hazardous materials are cleaned up and stored according to City policy and procedures; responds to emergencies as needed. Hours: Monday through Friday, rotating on call position that may include holidays or weekends. Regular and timely attendance is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent; and welding vocational school or apprenticeship training; and two year's welding experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required Licenses or Certifications: Must possess a valid driver license with a good driving record. Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Must obtain a class B - CDL within six months of hire. Must obtain Class D – Water/ Wastewater operator license from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within one year. Required Knowledge of: City policies and procedures. Methods, tools, and equipment used in welding and the repair of trucks and heavy equipment. Operation, maintenance, repair, and safety standards for motorized equipment and vehicles. State and City safety rules and regulations, including safety practices in a shop environment. Required Skill in: Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner. Interpreting technical manuals, instructions, blueprints, and diagrams. Following and maintaining safety standards. Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures. Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers. Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions. Ability to work around extreme noise and mechanical, electrical, and other conditions that may be adverse. Required to perform moderate physical work, and lift and carry up to 100 pounds.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Evaluates welding requests, determines proper techniques, and repairs vehicles, equipment and heavy equipment in accordance with standard procedures, safety regulations and City policy; advises supervisor if requested welding procedures are ineffective or dangerous. Works independently, and makes appropriate decisions based on work experience. Reviews work orders, inspects equipment to be repaired, assembles and orders materials and equipment, and plans work to be performed. Trains and coordinates work of welding work crew, assigns specific tasks to crew members, and inspects completed work to ensure compliance to safety and quality standards. Examines materials to be repaired to determine the strength and heating properties of parent metals and alloys; studies blueprints and sketches to determine needed repairs and construction standards. Uses welding equipment to join metal pieces and burn or cut through metal. Maintains work area and equipment; inspects and cleans equipment and facility. Performs maintenance and repairs within scope of authority, and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; notifies supervisors of repair problems beyond the scope of authority. Ensures that safety rules and regulations are followed; utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports safety hazards, equipment problems and emergency situations. Ensures that hazardous materials are cleaned up and stored according to City policy and procedures; responds to emergencies as needed. Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands. Promoting and enforcing safe work practices. Effective verbal and written communications.
