A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A YOUTH DEVELOPMENT WORKER
As a Youth Mentor 1, you have the rewarding job of providing supportive human services to our youth participants with varying degrees of developmental disabilities and behavioral challenges. Under the guidance of the Service Leader and/or Manager, you could work with these youth before and after school, when school is out, and on some weekends. In collaboration with the Behavior Support and Outcome Specialist teams, you help these youth develop socially and learn life skills in order to reach personal goals and increase independence.
You provide services in small groups or one-on-one. You may work on daily living skills for great interdepence. You may also work on skill-building to assist these youth in coping with their emotions according to their individualized service plans. You teach coping skills and anger management strategies. You are consistent and apply your excellent interpersonal and communication skills to your work. You are conscientious about keeping up-to-date and accurate documentation about all interventions and outcomes.
Though your job is extremely satisfying, it also may have its challenges. Using the training and coaching provided by Aptiv, you patiently respond to verbal or physical aggression with the appropriate behavioral interventions and are committed to the safety of all involved. Your empathy comes through in your interactions with each participant that you work with, but you also maintain proper professional boundaries at all times.
