The Center Director plans, organizes, and directs the operations and activities at Barwell Road Community Center personally or through subordinate employees. Central duties include the ability to dynamically engage the community and conduct outreach to underserved populations to develop and market programs for diverse ages and populations. Additionally, this role supervises part time staff and volunteers, one full-time Recreation Program Analyst, and one full-time Service Specialist or contracted cleaning employee.

Barwell Road Community Center:
Barwell Road Community Center was built in 2006 on 54.5 acres of land and is situated adjacent to Barwell Road Elementary School in a joint use agreement with Wake County Public School System. The community center features two separate gymnasiums, a dance studio, small classroom, large multipurpose room, warming kitchen, and fitness room. In 2021, the park opened a unique playground and Panther Play 60 Challenge course while in the planning stages of creating a large community garden that is currently projected to be completed this year. As one of the largest recreation centers in Raleigh, this venue serves families in the Southeast Raleigh, Garner and Knightdale communities with various active recreation classes, youth summer camp, and rental opportunities as well as the Before School, After School, and Track Out Program run by the department’s Youth Programs Division. The staff at Barwell Road Community Center also manage Anderson Point Park in Raleigh, which includes two picnic shelters, outdoor amphitheater, cottage, playground, two fields and open space.

Work Hours:
This position works at a community center that is open 7 days a week. Flexibility is required to be available for staff meetings, facility events, and providing coverage to part-time staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages general and revolving funds, tracking and reporting of expenses and analysis of facility spending needs and procures supplies for facility and program operation
  • Coordinates facility rentals and offsite amenities
  • Develops, delivers and enhances new and existing facility programs and special events for a 66-81 hours/week facility and oversees class observation and instructor evaluation
  • Recruits full-time and part-time staff including front desk support, certified instructors, and internal partnerships for program implementation
  • Provides customer service to patrons and the community, acting as a first-line departmental representative at public meetings and Neighborhood Registry Groups as well as managing patron complaints, refund requests, transfers or other exceptions
  • Oversees administration of athletic leagues and communicates with involved parties regarding inclement weather, evaluation of fields, participant safety and canceling/rescheduling games
  • Designs resource teams, public leadership groups and citizen planning committees
  • Regularly inspects the facility and park areas and submits service requests for maintenance as needed

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in parks and recreation, business or public administration and five years of professional parks and recreation programming, planning and/or facility management experience

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • CPR/First Aid/AED/EPI certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days post hire
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional; City of Raleigh additionally offers support in obtaining this certification
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire

Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
