The City of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) are establishing an eligible list for Engineering Technician I that will be used to fill vacancies that occur over the next year.

Engineering Technician I's perform entry-level field and office work in civil, electrical, mechanical, and/or architectural engineering. In this role you will perform mapping and drafting duties using computer-aided drafting and mapping equipment.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Perform computer-aided drafting for civil, electrical and mechanical drawings and GIS for civil/electrical/mechanical drawings
  • Record data on sectional maps; update additions and changes of poles, lines, circuits, easements and transformers, water mains, fire hydrants, valves, and water services
  • Maintain a running inventory of various types of electrical, water or public works installations; redraw and retrace old maps
  • Produce as-built drawings from construction drawings
  • Issue various permits for construction purposes; provide public information concerning street, traffic, utility services, water and power, research property information, read and understand legal descriptions
  • Perform traffic counts and field survey work; compile field data into reports; perform routine analysis on field survey data
  • Perform mathematical computations from field notes; tabulate statistics; perform traffic studies, draw graphs and charts showing trends and comparisons



QUALIFICATIONS:


Graduation from high school (or GED) AND
  • One year of work experience in sub-professional engineering related work, utilizing computer-aided drafting OR
  • Completion of an engineering technology vocational program, which includes computer-aided drafting

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENT
  • Valid Washington State driver's license at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter
  • Personal Protective Equipment and Safety Certificate may be required with maintenance thereafter



KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Practices, procedures and instruments used in engineering drafting work
  • Perform drafting and mapping work using computer-aided drafting
  • Utilize a variety of standard software programs
  • Technical aspects of field of specialty
  • Basic research methods
  • Perform mathematical computations quickly and accurately
  • Learn to interpret, apply and explain codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches
  • Identify properties from a legal description
  • Maintain records and prepare reports
  • Meet schedules and time lines
  • Use effective oral and written communications
  • Apply basic safety principles and practices
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy

Appointment is subject to passing a background check. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Local 17. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
