POSITION: NR Technician I/II - Selective Gear Harvest

SALARY: Technician I: $15.78 - 18.30 | Technician II: $16.98 - 19.68

REPORTS TO: Natural Resource Technician Senior/Leader

LOCATION: Omak, WA

Basic Functions: The Colville Tribes’ Department of Fish & Wildlife, Omak, is advertising one, Fisheries Technician I/II position. This position is Permanent. The incumbent will aid in the mark-selective harvest and collection of field data on anadromous fish in the upper Columbia region, including the Okanogan River. Work elements include, but are not limited to: crewmember on the Tribes’ purse seine vessel; distributing fish; maintaining equipment; data collection for total catch, effort, mortality, species composition, life history, mark type, abundance, distribution, age, growth, and other basic biological data for fishery management purposes of species being studied. May assist others in performance of habitat enhancement projects such as building fence and planting vegetation, or fish acclimation pond care and maintenance. This position requires lifting, pulling, and hauling in all kinds of weather conditions on variable terrain. Beginning pay range is determined upon relevant education/experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Training:

  • For Technician I: Entry level Fisheries Technician. Must have a satisfactory work history and high school diploma or GED.

  • For Technician II: Must have a satisfactory work history, high school diploma or GED, and 30 months of combined work experience/education demonstrating the ability to perform the functions of this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Work elements include participating in sampling programs designed to provide basic biological and physical data for fishery management purposes.

  • Identifying anadromous and resident fish species of the Okanogan River basin, and participating in the selective harvest and distribution of target salmonids.

  • Aiding in the collection of biological information related to fish resources using established procedures and protocols, including catch, effort, mortality, species composition, life history, abundance, distribution, age, growth, and other basic biological data for fishery and wildlife management purposes.

  • Interrogating fish for tags, including (but not limited to) coded wire tags (CWT), passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags and floy tags, and recording relevant information.

  • Participates in the production and transportation of ice for fishing and fish distribution activities.

  • Safely operating a small boat.

  • Performing routine and emergency maintenance and repairs on applicable fishing gears, including purse seine nets, tangle nets, hoop nets and scaffolds; boats, trucks and trailers.

  • Entering collected data into computer spreadsheet and/or database.

  • Organization of multiple duties and responsibilities in a timely fashion.

  • Working safely, efficiently and has a willingness and desire to learn.

  • Performance of other related tasks as required.

  • Previous experience collecting fisheries, habitat and water quality data is preferred.

  • Knowledge of fish identification, selective harvest techniques, river boating, and basic mechanics. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Access are highly valued;

  • Technicians will be asked to use computers and other state of the art field equipment to collect, enter and tabulate data; operate 4-wheel drive vehicles, safely operate rafts and motor boats in riverine environments; safely use hand or power tools in support of project objectives; perform other varied, outdoor tasks as required;

  • These positions may require working a variable schedule, including: long hours, nights, weekends, early mornings and holidays performing tasks on variable and slippery terrain, carrying loads up to 60 lbs, and working in all weather conditions.

  • Previous mark-selective fish harvest experience required.

  • Previous data collection experience required.

  • Excellent attendance at the assigned duty station located in Omak, WA.

  • Possession of a valid State Drivers License and eligibility for the Tribes’ vehicle insurance is required.

  • Must be willing and able to work long shifts on a variable schedule, including: nights, early mornings, late evenings, holidays and weekends as the work dictates.

  • Must be in good physical condition and able to work in inclement weather conditions and over variable, slippery and rugged terrain with supplies and equipment.

  • Works on projects individually and/or as a team member in a pleasant, efficient, and consistent manner.

  • Must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment.

  • Indian Preference does apply.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
