HMRU Manager

APPLY

Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.

HMRU Manager
- Frances A. Johnston and Charlotte M. Young Human Metabolic Research Unit (HMRU) and the Human Nutritional Chemistry Service Laboratory

Who we are:

The Division of Nutritional Sciences (the Division) plays a leading role in national and international nutrition research, teaching, and public engagement. Focal areas for faculty research include precision nutrition, metabolism, lifecycle nutrition, microbiome, and nutrient interactions, food and nutrition systems, health equity, and social and behavioral nutrition. The HMRU Manager plays an instrumental role in advancing this research and education.

The HMRU provides an array of equipment, facilities, and expertise to enable researchers in the Division and elsewhere at Cornell to conduct nutrition and metabolism research with human participants. The HMRU consists of an exercise physiology laboratory, body composition laboratory, ultrasound unit, metabolic kitchen and dining room, and facilities to perform biomedical procedures such as phlebotomy, ultrasounds, oral glucose tolerance testing, and fat and muscle biopsies. There are currently 8 research studies totaling $13.1M being supported by the HMRU. The Human Nutrition Chemistry Service Laboratory was established in 2004 to provide analytical techniques in support of human studies for the Division and Cornell broadly. This state-of-the-art facility contains instruments and machinery to support research on nutritional and biochemical biomarkers related to human nutrition and can conduct numerous assays on samples from other species.

What you will do:

The Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University seeks a Nurse Practitioner or Medical Doctor to manage the Frances A. Johnston and Charlotte M. Young Human Metabolic Research Unit (HMRU) and the Human Nutritional Chemistry Service Laboratory. The Division and the HMRU are on Cornell’s Ithaca campus, remotely located from its medical campus. In conjunction with Cornell’s medical oversight physician and providers in Cornell Health Occupational Medicine, the manager serves as a medical expert on conducting biomedical procedures with human participants outside of a medical setting and as the licensed and trained individual who conducts and oversees the clinical procedures performed with human participants. The Manager works closely with faculty and other researchers to plan and implement research protocols, recruit participants, perform related procedures, and to conduct the didactic and laboratory components of several courses. The manager oversees a dietitian and the operations to develop and implement dietary components of research protocols. The manager is responsible for quality assurance, participant safety, staff credentialing, adherence to license requirements, and assessing and communicating adverse findings. The HMRU is a CLIA-waived lab facility. The Manager is responsible for HMRU and Chemistry Lab operations, business practices, safety, protocol adherence, and service efficacy. The Manager represents the Division and collaborates with University-level units, including Cornell’s medical oversight team, Institutional Review Board (IRB), and Offices of Research Integrity and Assurance (ORIA) and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).
