Licensed Vocational Nurse III
The Nursing Education LVN III works under the direct supervision of the Nurse Educator to assist nursing personnel to be able to provide for the care, treatment, and general welfare of patients. Responsibilities include: providing training in medication administration, AMAR system, noting and transcribing physician’s orders, order entry, wound care, ear lavage, EKG, urine hCG testing, oxygen administration, referral/consultation process, patient/family education plans. The Nursing Education LVN III communicates vital information to the Nurse Educator in relation to progress or lack thereof of nursing staff. She/he serves as a preceptor/mentor for LVN students and new nurses.

Completion of work requires moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. The LVN III has no financial responsibility but is accountable for assigned property.
Provides nursing support as assigned by the Nurse Educator with the understanding that duties, location of work, and shift patterns are subject to change as determined by administration to meet the needs of the hospital.

Essential Job Functions:
1. Assists the RN Nurse Educator in developing and coordinating systems to ensure nursing personnel are competent in the provision of psychiatric nursing services, and assesses training needs on an ongoing basis to assist with future planning.
2. Assists the RN Nurse Educator in developing curricula based on the hospital's/program's mission, philosophy and framework and plans for appropriate learning experiences.
3. Assists the RN Nurse Educator in developing and coordinating a nursing preceptor program for new nurses that ensures staff competency in basic psychiatric nursing processes in order to provide quality services to our clients and promotes retention.
4. Assists the RN Nurse Educator in conducting regularly, scheduled in-services that are designed to develop nursing staff and their roles, augment their knowledge level and maintain current competencies.
5. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor within the person’s abilities and classification in order to facilitate smooth program/department operation.
6. Employee actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation
7. Attends annual training as well as any required department specific training.
8. Ability to be flexible with hours as needed to meet the needs of the organization.
9. Ability to work professionally with a variety of departments and outside agencies.
10. Ability to speak in front of large and small groups of people and perform recruitment initiatives on behalf of the hospital.
11. Ability to compile data and develop reports for sharing data with others.
12. Ability to compile data and coordinate investigations for medication errors and report back to the ACNE and CNE.
13. Ability to review and update policies and procedures as well as ensure that all updates are reflected in the curricula for the Nursing Education Department.



Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1. Knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures, CPI Continuous Performance Improvement, Corporate Compliance, Emergency Preparedness Procedures, Mental Health and Mental Illness MHRS System, MADS Sheet, Rights of Patients, DSHS Departmental Rules.
2. Knowledge of all and adhere to: Mental Health Code, Nursing Policy and Procedure Manual, Infection Control Policy and Procedure Manual, Safety Manual, NTSH Administrative Policy and Procedure Manual.
3. Must have the ability to demonstrate competency in the following:
Use of Medical Equipment to include: glucometer, AED, Oxygen, plus oximetry, EKG, Ear Lavage device; Competency in Urine hCG testing, Wound Care administration, Mantoux screening, Medication Administration to include but not limited to using the MediMAR system and noting/transcribing orders.
4. Demonstrate skill and capability of accurately observing and identifying significant patient behaviors and possesses the capability of accurately describing such events in the patient’s record.
5. Group Process to include: medication education, disease processes, disease management/prevention.
6. Knowledge of Special Observations, Voluntary and Involuntary Behavioral Interventions, Psychopharmacology, Medication Administration, Medication Variance, Transcription of Medication Orders, Consent for Psychoactive Medication, CRS (Computerized Record System), CWS (Clinician Work Station), Psychiatric Symptoms and Aggression Management.
7. Ability to work with others and accept supervision.
8. Flexibility in work hours will be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Licensed as a LVN in the state of Texas or in a party state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact as described in Art. 4528b of the Nurse Practice Act.


Initial Selection Criteria:
Licensed as a LVN in the state of Texas or in a party state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact as described in Art. 4528b of the Nurse Practice Act.

Previous nursing experience with a minimum of 3 years as a LVN in a recognized health agency.

Good typing and communication skills, as evidenced by job application.

Any employment offer is contingent upon available budgeted funds. The offered salary will be determined in accordance with budgetary limits and the requirements of HHSC Human Resources Manual Chapter 7.

All of these diseases are vaccine-preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals.
