Position Summary:

Plans and conducts work within a global business unit requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, application, adaptation and modification of standard architectural techniques, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to solving problems encountered.


Responsibilities:

  • Plans architectural layout, prepares detailed architectural design and layout drawings for small buildings and portions of major buildings.
  • Prepares specifications and related documents.
  • Prepares building material interface details for review by senior personnel.
  • Prepares architectural designs and construction drawings using 2-D / 3-D computer aided design (CAD), presentation graphics and architectural models.
  • Coordinates work and collaborates with other project engineering disciplines. Review design drawings and documents submitted by suppliers and subcontractors for compliance with architectural and engineering requirements.
  • Participates in studies that require knowledge of principles and techniques commonly employed in architectural work.
  • Assists in on-the-job training and development of people assigned.
  • Assists in preparation of forecasts, quantity take-offs and change orders.
  • Participates in and fosters a work environment that is based upon openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
  • Evaluates, selects applicable procedures and criteria, and applies standard architectural presentation techniques, using independent judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications.
  • Performs assignments that have clear and specified objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables for architectural discipline within a global business unit.
  • Performs architectural tasks having some degree of complexity.
  • Reviews and recommends approval of design drawings and data for compliance with requirements.
  • Knowledge and understanding of roles played by other disciplines on the project.
  • Familiarity with all Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs) and their application to projects.
  • Knowledge of design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) applicable to the discipline.


Job Knowledge:

  • Technical knowledge of architectural concepts, techniques, materials and construction methods. Working knowledge of planning, control methods.
  • Understanding of the application of Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), relevant Bechtel design guides on projects, and of architecture to plant constructability as applied to construction methods and materials.
  • Familiarity with construction practices and economics.
  • Knowledge of current computer applications for architectural design including computer aided design (CAD), both 2-D and 3-D, Autocad and/or Revit, and relevant Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs).
  • Current knowledge of industry or regulatory codes and standards and design criteria pertinent to architectural work.
  • Skill in assessing the scope of problems and developing practical solutions.


Job Dimensions:

Supervision Received

  • Receives operational supervision and technical guidance from a senior Supervising Designer, Senior Engineer or Engineering Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised

  • May be required to provide operational direction and technical guidance to subordinate designer and drafter personnel as directed.

Contacts

  • Establishes and maintains communication with design and engineering supervisors in charge of related disciplines and with administrative personnel within the group or project. Consults with equipment suppliers, technical specialists and client representatives as directed to provide and receive technical information.


Qualifications and Skills:

Basic Qualifications

  • A minimum of 12 years of Project Design experience covering job description as noted.
  • Basic skill in oral and written communication.
  • A license to practice architecture from an recognized licensing board.
  • A recognized degree in architecture from an accredited college or university.
  • A sufficient number of specialized courses in architectural design, planning, materials engineering, construction methods and related engineering equivalent to one of the above.
  • Practical work experience to the extent necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. This practical work experience must be primarily in architecture but may be supplemented by relevant experience in allied phases of the building industry.
  • Understands the standard architectural work planning, scheduling and cost estimating, and conducts independent work requiring judgment in the application of design techniques. Normally uses conventional approaches to technical problems encountered.
  • Working knowledge of precedents in the specialty area, the principles and practices of related technical areas, and with coordinating work with other technical disciplines.
  • Provides technical direction and assigns work to architects, designers, and drafters who assist on specific assignments.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Heavy industrial architectural experience preferred, such as work in Chemical, Oil and Gas, Refineries. Light industrial experience will also be considered.
