Sterile Compounding Pharmacist


The Sterile Compounding Pharmacist will serve as the department’s primary resource for all sterile compounding within the Central Pharmacy. The Sterile Compounding Pharmacist will be responsible for the management and supervision of the daily activities of staff assigned to sterile compounding operations and for all activities and processes designed to provide safe and accurate compounded pharmaceuticals for patient care.

The individual will strive to improve the safety and efficiency of our compounding workflows through observation, practice modifications and through the utilization of available technologies. This individual will also be responsible for the creation, implementation, and management of a comprehensive quality assurance program to ensure compliance with all state, federal, and accreditation statues and standards (including applicable USP standards).

Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy required.
  • Three years of Pharmaceutical/Pharmacology experience preferred.
  • One year of Sterile Compounding experience required.
  • Licensed as a Pharmacist by the Virginia Department of Health Professions required.
  • Sterile Compounding Board Certification in Compounded Sterile Preparations (BCSCP) to be obtained with 12 months of employment.
  • ASHP Compounded Sterile Preparations Certificate for Pharmacists preferred.
Responsibilities:
  • Serve as expert resource to pharmacy team regarding sterile compounding procedures, medications, electronic medical record builds for sterile medications.
  • Direct oversight of daily sterile compounding activities including supervision of all assigned staff.
  • Supervise the day-to-day sterile products production and drug distribution system, evaluate alternatives, and follow up on issues and concerns.
    Submit Epic tickets for any issues related to compounding & repackaging records and the order verification of sterile products.
  • Train, coach, and evaluate pharmacist and technician staff on sterile compounding policies and procedures and proper use of non-hazardous and hazardous sterile clean room areas; monitor adherence.
  • Develop and coordinate orientations and educational in-service programs and/or competency modules (Health Stream) for the pharmacy staff.
  • Ensures compliance with USP <795>, <797>, <800> and other pertinent/related standards, including all necessary requirements and mandatory reporting for all designated sterile compounding areas.
  • Oversee environmental, personnel, and performance monitoring program to ensure optimal safety, compliance, and operational performance.
  • Ensure chemotherapy, plasma biologics and intravenous medications used for sterile compounding are ordered according to established par levels.
  • Identify and implement recommendations for process improvement including areas of cost effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy leadership and quality to prevent and/or follow up on safety occurrences regarding compounded sterile medications.
