Job Summary
The Jones Lab is looking for a responsible and well-organized individual to be a central team member where, in addition to providing critical biological and engineering planning and analyses, s/he will bear primary responsibility for managing studies and running experiments. Specific duties include: 1) designing, building and testing microfluidic devices for host immune cell function, 2) designing and validating experimental protocols and data acquisition setups, 3) running experimental protocols, 4) analyzing data, 5) preparing reports, project documentation, publications and making presentations, 6) identification of equipment and supply needs and overseeing timely ordering and budget management, and 7) ensuring adherence to all research regulatory and safety requirements (IBC protocol) including applying for and maintaining approvals for studies involving animals (IACUC application) and humans (IRB application) (in collaboration with UT Southwestern).

Projects include:
  • Creating new approaches for studying host immune cell function in Vascular Assist Device Patients
  • Quantification of the immunological determinants of people at higher risk of developing infection or sepsis


The ideal candidate will possess an enthusiasm for science. If selected, applicants are encouraged to stay for a year or two, after which they will move on to graduate studies in prestigious universities, or positions in industry. Ability to manage project schedules for the delivery of program objectives. Ability to execute work independently as well as in in a highly multidisciplinary team environment. Ability to train and lead others. Good analytical, organizational and communications skills to clearly summarize data to communicate methods used, results, and conclusions for discussion in lab meetings and other forums. Ability to interact with professional conduct.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in the field of assignment.

Preferred Education and Experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in a science or engineering discipline
  • One year working or educational experience in microfluidics (engineering), cell biology/molecular biology/immunology or computer science.
  • Computer skills including: AutoCAD, MATLAB, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Phlebotomy certification.

Description of job responsibility/duty:
  • Obtain and maintain scientific and technical knowledge needed to support overall research and individual studies (i.e. primary immune cell isolation and cell culture). Utilize this knowledge in the development of tools, fixtures, processes, protocols and in meeting other biological and engineering objectives.
  • Take the lead in the interpretation of results from experiments including the preparation of reports, documentation, publications, and presentations.
  • Create and maintain project documents, disseminating as needed.
  • Participate on committees and in professional organizations and meetings.

Description of job responsibility/duty:
  • Design and construct microfluidic devices for cell analysis, using a variety of methods, such as soft lithographic rapid prototyping and other standard MEMS device fabrication techniques. Ensure devices are operational to include troubleshoot and coordinate and/or perform technical adjustment and maintenance to devices.
  • Test integrated microfluidic systems using a range of test fluids, cell types and clinical samples. Evaluate the performance of the systems through careful data collection and documentation of work practices. Evaluate and optimize assays in order to meet system design specifications.
  • Critically analyze data collected in the evaluation of microfluidic systems, organize this data, and present data to project manager and/or to the project team. Discuss any observed experimental conditions that may need to be modified with PI; implement recommendations.

  • Oversight and maintenance of laboratory: Identify laboratory equipment and supply needs and oversee the timely and cost-effective ordering of these items.
  • Ensure adherence to all research regulatory and safety requirements. Apply for and maintain approvals for studies involving human and animals; work effectively with research administration and regulatory bodies to communicate and accomplish goals.
  • Work within a team-oriented system, but also managing individual research projects. In addition, train and supervise peers and students on project-specific protocols and equipment operation. Ensure safe operating practices, including developing instructional materials and tools.
